Sudan
The British government advises against travel to Sudan, where decades of civil war and political instability culminated in the Darfur Conflict and the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from it. In 2011 the people of South Sudan voted to secede from the country, so it may no longer be accurate to say Sudan is the largest country in Africa. The country is split from north to south by the River Nile. The White Nile and Blue Nile, which flows from the highlands of Ethiopia, join at Khartoum, the capital. The National Museum has a collection of Egyptian antiquities. The Nubian Desert, with its frequent dust storms, occupies the north of the country. In contrast the south has swamps and rainforest. There is a coastline on the Red Sea, with the important trading centre of Port Sudan. There are also beaches and diving facilities for tourists. Sudan has rich oil and mineral resources. Cotton is the main export crop. Over four hundred languages and dialects have been identified. The ancient city of Napata and the nearby hill of Jebal Barkal is a World Heritage site. Once the southern limit of the Egyptian Empire, it contains ruined pyramids, temples and palaces.
