Tunisia
The North African nation of Tunisia has been part of the Carthaginian, Roman, and Ottoman Empires, all of which have left important archaeological or cultural legacies. A poor human rights record, as well as political repression and corruption, led to the 2011 Jasmine Revolution and the fall of the ruling dynasty. Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa. In the north of the country is the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains. There is a temperate coastal plain on the east coast, while the south of the nation is flat and arid. Oil is exported, and the country is a major olive producer. There is a well- developed tourist infrastructure and excellent beaches. Ichkeul Lake is a World Heritage site, an important wetland area used by migrating birds including pink flamingos. Sadly it has been placed on the danger list because of rising salinity caused by dam construction. There are several Heritage sites dating from antiquity: the site of ancient Carthage; the Kerkouane necropolis from the same period; and the superb Roman amphitheatres at El Djem and Dougga. Dating from the Islamic period is the Great Mosque of Kairouan, and the Medinas or old towns of Tunis and Sousse.
