Afghanistan
Formerly a key crossroads in the ancient Silk Road trade route between China and the Middle East, modern Afghanistan is in the process of rebuilding its political institutions and an economy devastated by three decades of conflict. Though the country is mainly mountainous, there are extensive plains in the north and south west. Agriculture has always been an important part of the economy, and fruit like grapes and apricots are grown. There is also potential for the development of mining. The culture of the area is based on a complex social structure which demands loyalty to tribal and clan leaders. There is a strong tradition of Persian poetry and verse, dating back a thousand years. The ancient city of Kabul is the national capital. Deep in the mountains of the Hindu Kush, its bazaars sell Afghan rugs and leather goods. There is an international airport and the National Museum. The Babur Gardens date from the time of the Mughals, and were visited by Emperors like Jehangir and Shah Jehan, builder of the Taj Mahal. The newly constructed Abdul Rahman mosque is the largest in Kabul. The second city of Kandahar has seen extensive reconstruction.
