Bahrain
The small island kingdom of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf is connected to Saudi Arabia by a sixteen mile long causeway. Once famous for its pearl industry, it now relies on its oil wealth, which has transformed a local trading centre into the fastest growing economy in the Arab world. The main island is flat and arid, and suffers from occasional dust storms. Bahrain Fort, once occupied by Persians and later the Portuguese, is a World Heritage Site. Modern buildings in the Capital, Manama, include the towers of the Bahrain World Trade Center and the Bahrain Financial Harbor. If the kilometre-tall Murjan Tower is built, it will become the World’s tallest man-made structure. The International Airport is situated on Muhurraq Island, connected to Bahrain by another causeway. There are a number of planned projects which involve the creation of luxury developments on man-made islands with hotels, marinas and golf courses. Bahraini cuisine includes many fresh fish dishes. In 2004 the Bahrain International Circuit hosted the first Grand Prix in the Middle East.
