Bangladesh
Bangladesh, once East Pakistan, is one of the world’s most densely populated nations. Situated in the flat Ganges Delta region, it suffers from periodic flooding and is particularly vulnerable to climate change. However, while it is still a poor country, the economy of Bangladesh has been widely tipped for future growth. Dhaka, the capital, is one of the world’s largest cities and also one of the fastest-growing. This has led to problems of congestion and pollution. Sometimes known as the ‘Rickshaw Capital of the World’, its climate is tropical, with a distinct monsoon season. Bangladeshi cuisine shares many features with Indian food. A typical snack is Dhakai Bakarkhani, a thick bread. The marshy jungle of the coastal Sundarbans region is the refuge of the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger. Bangladesh is a major producer of rice. Other crops include jute, and tea which is grown in the upland areas. The Bengali language has a rich tradition of literature, dating back more than a thousand years. Cricket is a popular sport, with the national team recording their first victory over England in 2010.
