Brunei is a Sultanate on the island of Borneo. Its oil resources have made it one of the World’s richest countries. The Sultan is said to have a personal fortune of some $20 billion, owns over a hundred Rolls Royces, and resides in the world’s largest palace, Istana Nurul Iman. The capital is Bandar Seri Begawan. The spectacular Sultan Ali Omar Mosque, with its golden dome, dominates the riverside skyline. Some thirty thousand people live in the Kampong Ayer district. This is a water village with houses on stilts, served by water taxis from the downtown area. The culture and cuisine of Brunei are predominantly Malay, though the relatively conservative regime means that the sale of alcohol is banned. Coconut milk is a favourite drink. A local delicacy is ambuyat: sago dipped in sour fruit sauce. Ecotourists can visit the swamps of Selirong Mangrove Island where there are crocodiles, monkeys and the flying lemur or colugo. Other visitors enjoy the beach at Muara, and several fine golf courses.
