Pakistan
Pakistan has the sixth largest population in the world. Formed by the partition of British India in 1947, the nation has had periods of military rule and conflicts with India. Terrorism, corruption and poverty are continuing challenges. The landscape is diverse, ranging from the flat plains along the River Indus, to the Thar Desert, the coniferous forests in the Highlands, and the icy peaks of the Karakorum and Hindu Kush, which rise to the summit of K2, the world’s second highest mountain. Pakistan’s economy is moving from agriculture towards the service sector, with a recent growth in technology and telecommunications. The country is multi-ethnic, with over sixty languages, however the overwhelming majority are Muslims. Nevertheless there is a great diversity of musical and cultural traditions, with different regional cuisines. The capital is the planned city of Islamabad, however the two largest cities are Karachi and Lahore. Karachi is a huge metropolis with architecture from colonial and post-colonial periods. Lahore, the main cultural centre, has fine Mughal architecture like the Jehangir’s Tomb, the Badshahi Mosque and the Shalimar Gardens, created by Shah Jehan, builder of the Taj Mahal. Cricket and hockey are the most popular sports.
