Thailand
Thailand has a long recorded history and an ancient cultural heritage. The ruins of the temples of Ayutthaya and the towns of the Sukhothai Kingdom date from the fourteenth century. Formerly known as Siam, the country managed to resist European colonialism. The monarchy, as a national symbol commands popular respect, despite the recent political instability. Thailand has a mountainous northern region. The central river valleys drain into the Gulf of Thailand. The southern region narrows at the Kra Isthmus, continuing down the long Malay Peninsula. There are no less than 33 National Parks. The climate is tropical with monsoons. The capital, Bangkok, is the world’s third most visited destination, behind London and New York. Medical tourism is a growing industry. Other popular resorts are Phuket and Pattaya, where there are golf courses, a zoo, tropical botanical gardens, aquaria and amusement parks. Thailand is the world’s largest rice producer, but has developed a modern industrial base in areas like electronics and automotive products. Muay Thai or kick boxing, is the most popular sport. The culture is based on Buddhist values. The cuisine includes dishes with fish sauces, lemongrass, lime and chillis. Jasmine rice is served with most meals.
