High in the rugged Pyrenees, sandwiched between France and Spain, lies the tiny principality of Andorra, set in a handful of deep valleys between snow-covered peaks. Its Catalan-speaking inhabitants enjoy Europe’s highest life expectancy and lowest unemployment rates, while their capital, Andorra la Vella, is the loftiest in the continent. The duty free status of the country, which is not part of the European Union, makes it a tax haven for the wealthy, as well as a favourite destination for tourists who can buy luxury goods at bargain prices. Ten million visit each year, even though they have to travel by road, as there are no airports or railway stations within Andorra’s borders. Skiing in winter is a major attraction, though in summer, mountain walking is popular. Every year on 8th September, pilgrims visit the shrine of the national patroness, Our Lady of Meritxell.
