Denmark
Denmark, between the North Sea and the Baltic, consists of a peninsula, Jutland, and a number of islands, some connected by bridges. In former times the home of the marauding Vikings, modern Denmark has been ranked as the World’s happiest country, with its exceptionally high standards of health, education and welfare. The landscape is mostly flat, ideal for agriculture. Danish bacon and butter are exported round the world. Denmark has pioneered the development and construction of wind turbines. One of the country’s most famous writers was Hans Christian Andersen, whose character the Little Mermaid is commemorated in the famous statue in the capital, Copenhagen. Other sights in the city, famous for its spires, its bicycle paths and its cleanliness, include the royal Amalienborg Palace, the Tivoli Gardens and the modern Opera House. Nearby is Kronborg Castle, which is associated with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The second city, Aarhus, has the huge St Clemens Cathedral with its medieval frescoes. At Billund is the original Legoland. The Viking ship Museum at Roskilde has the remains of five longships of the eleventh century. Danish cuisine includes smorrebrod or open sandwiches, and Danish pastries. Carlsberg beer is exported round the world.
