Italy
There are few countries that have made such a contribution to World culture as Italy, whether in the fields of science, literature, architecture, art or religion. Two thousand years ago the city of Rome was the hub of an empire that spanned the Mediterranean, and gave the world great writers and statesmen, as well as legal systems that have lasted to the present day. Later the city became the centre of Christianity with the establishment of the Papacy and the building of St Peter’s. The Renaissance produced the genius of Galileo and Leonardo, and artists like Raphael and Michelangelo. The tradition of music encompasses names like Vivaldi and Verdi as well as the development of modern opera. Today the traveller in Italy can visit the world’s finest cities: Venice, Florence and Milan, explore buildings like the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the ruins of Pompeii, and enjoy iconic dishes like spaghetti and pizza, accompanied by some of the world’s best wines. Sunny beaches, winter sports and football teams like Inter Milan continue the list of attractions. Modern Italy is a home of fashion and cutting edge design, epitomised by names like Gucci, Prada, Versace and Ferrari.
