Serbia
Serbia, a landlocked Balkan country, has recently emerged from a period of isolation following the turmoil of the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The country is divided between the mountainous south and the plains of the north. Between the two regions, lies the capital, Belgrade, on the River Danube. The city suffered damage from bombing during the Kosovo war, however there are interesting buildings from the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Communist eras, as well as palaces and museums for the tourist. Belgrade is developing a reputation as a friendly, vibrant modern city. The country has a number of famous medieval monasteries, many of which have the status of World Heritage sites. There are extensive forested areas in the mountains. Serbia has a diverse and eclectic cuisine. Cevapcici, a type of skinless sausage, is perhaps the nearest approach to a national dish. There is a strong sporting tradition, especially in basketball and tennis. Serbia exports frozen fruit, including one third of the world’s raspberries.
