Spain
Many of the tourists who visit Spain each year see no further than the beaches of the Costa Brava and the Costa del Sol, however the country offers the traveller an unparalleled variety of experiences. The plains of Andalusia in the south, backed by the snow capped Sierra Nevada, contrast with the greener foothills of the Pyrenees and the Basque country. In Granada, the exotic Alhambra is a legacy of Moorish rule, while Spain’s long Catholic heritage can be seen in the great cathedrals of Toledo, Leon, Cordoba and Seville. The castles of Spain, as well as the medieval city walls of Avila, and palaces like El Escorial bear witness to former glories. In the capital, Madrid, with its elegant avenues, is the Museo del Prado, where the art of El Greco, Velazquez and Goya may be viewed. Picasso and Dali are famous names of more recent Spanish art. Stylish Barcelona, centre of the Catalan region, has Gaudi’s iconic Sagrada Familia. Spain’s culture also includes the traditional music and dance of flamenco and the more controversial spectacle of the corrida. Spanish Cuisine is famous for paella, gazpacho and ham, as well as wines like Rioja and Cava.
