The island of Cuba, seven hundred miles long, lies to the south of Florida in the Caribbean. The scenery is flat or rolling, however there are mountains in the south. The climate is tropical, but hurricanes are frequent. Cuba has begun to supplement its traditional sources of income like tobacco, sugar and coffee, with tourism. This has been most successful in the specialised field of Health tourism. The capital, Havana, has a wide range of architectural styles, from colonial to art deco and modernist. The Cuban National Ballet, based at the Gran Teatro, is world famous. The Old Town of Havana and its fortifications is a World Heritage Site. Sport and music have been an important part of the Cuban way of life. The most popular sport is baseball, while dance rhythms like salsa, rhumba and mambo have Cuban origins. Rice with black beans is a staple dish, while the Cuban sandwich is made with ham and Swiss cheese. The most famous poet was Jose Marti, one of whose works became the patriotic song ‘Guantanamera’. Over a million Cubans have emigrated or fled as refugees to the United States.
