The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola. It has become the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean, thanks to its tropical climate, its beaches, its newly built resorts, and its excellent golf courses. There are several mountain ranges. Pico Duarte is the Caribbean’s highest summit. There are fertile valleys between the ranges, where plantain, cocoa and bananas are grown, however there are also arid areas, for example around Lake Enriquillo, a salt lake that lies below sea level. The capital is Santo Domingo, which has a modern metro system, has the distinction of being the first European settlement in the Americas, and claims to have America’s first cathedral, first castle and first monastery. There are a number of shopping malls and the offices of major banks in the downtown area. The port and marina have been renovated and are expected to attract cruise ships. The national dance, the merengue, has become popular throughout Latin America. Baseball is the favourite sport and many Dominicans have played professionally in the United States.
