Grenada is a Caribbean island nation in the group known as the Grenadines. It came to the notice of the world in 1983 when, after a coup, the United States invaded the island. The capital is St George’s, the main tourist destination, where there are regular visits by cruise ships. There are a number of good beaches. The soils are extremely fertile and the climate is tropical. The main export is spice, notably mace and nutmeg, which both come from the same plant. One of the fruits is portrayed on the national flag. The African heritage of many islanders is reflected in tradition of storytelling and in the folk music. Like most West Indians, Grenadians enjoy the music and dance of carnival. Oildown, meat or dumplings cooked in coconut milk, is the national dish, but Asian influence is evident in the popularity curries and Indian sweets. Rum is the favourite drink. Mount St Catherine is the highest peak, one of several volcanoes on the island and under the surrounding seas. In 2007 Grenada hosted matches in the Cricket World Cup in the new National Stadium.
