The richest and most powerful nation on earth, the United States, has made an exceptional contribution to the history and culture of the modern world. In science, the arts, literature, commerce and music, America has been a leader. The country has played a major role in encouraging the spread of democracy, freedom and human rights in every continent and has offered the American Dream of prosperity to millions of immigrants, making it one of the most ethnically diverse nations. The environment ranges from the snowy peaks of the Rockies to deserts, prairies, the Mississippi, the Grand Canyon and the Arctic wilderness of Alaska. American inventors have produced the aeroplane, the telephone, the assembly line, and sent men to the Moon. American corporations have become global brands: Coca Cola, Ford, General Electric, Exxon and Microsoft. The capital, Washington DC, contains the Presidential residence, the White House, and the Capitol Building. New York City’s famous skyline includes the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty. Other great cities are San Francisco, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles. In the field of popular entertainment America has given us Hollywood, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, baseball, American football, and the hamburger.
