Guyana
Guyana, though on the South American mainland, looks to the English-speaking Caribbean for its culture; however there is a strong Asian influence both in the music and the cuisine. Most people live in the coastal regions. Inland are rainforest and mountainous plateaus said to have inspired Conan Doyle’s Lost World. There is a huge range of habitats and wildlife, memorably described by experts like Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough. Shell Beach is a breeding area for sea turtles; while in the Kaieteur National Park are found Jaguar and the tiny Tree Frog, as well as the Kaieteur Falls, the world’s largest single-drop waterfalls by volume. There are four hundred species in the unspoiled Kanaku Mountains alone. The capital, Georgetown, has St George’s Cathedral, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Nearby the floating bridge over the Demerara River is over a mile long. Exports include rice and sugar. Guyana is an ethnically diverse nation, including many people of Amerindian origin. There have been tensions between different groups. Guyana’s cricketers represent the West Indies, and stars like Sir Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai became national heroes. The country helped to host the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
