There are four hundred species in the unspoiled Kanaku Mountains alone. The capital, Georgetown, has St George’s Cathedral, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Nearby the floating bridge over the Demerara River is over a mile long. Exports include rice and sugar. Guyana is an ethnically diverse nation, including many people of Amerindian origin. There have been tensions between different groups. Guyana’s cricketers represent the West Indies, and stars like Sir Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai became national heroes.
