Uruguay
The small South American nation of Uruguay lies on the north side of the River Plate estuary. A ferry service connects the capital, Montevideo, with Buenos Aires. The economy still has a large agricultural sector. Traditionally beef was a major export, and cattle are still raised on the estancias or ranches. There has been a growth in so-called agritourism, in which visitors work on farms. The country is largely flat and the climate is temperate. Punta del Este is the main seaside resort, with beaches. The most historic town is Colonia del Sacramento, originally a Portuguese settlement. The walled old town is a World Heritage site, with examples of colonial buildings. Montevideo is a lively cultural centre noted for its art deco architecture. The cuisine reflects the European origins of many Uruguayan immigrants, especially those from Italy. Beef is not surprisingly frequently found on menus, often barbecued. One native Uruguayan delicacy is Caruso sauce, made of cream and ham, served over pasta. Football is the most popular sport. Uruguay has won two World Cups, including the first in 1930. Uruguay shares the tradition of Tango music and dance with Argentina. Candombe is the African musical genre, heard at carnival.
